Despite Big Free Agency Spending, NBA Owners Press For Concessions From Players Union Under Lockout Threat- 07/20/10By Doug Cunningham Even multi-millionaire NBA players have labor issues with their bosses. And this year those issues may lead to the owners locking the players out of NBA stadiums. New York Daily News NBA columnist Mitch Lawrence says despite throwing millions of dollars at players in free agency, NBA owners are saying they lost about $400 million last season, so they’re out for concessions from the players union. President Obama Calls On Republicans To Quit Holding Jobless Workers Hostage To Politics- 07/20/10President Barack Obama challenged the Senate to break a logjam on extending unemployment benefits on Monday. Republican Senators and Nebraska Democrat Ben Nelson have prevented the passage of the extension even as 2.1 million Americans have watched their benefits expire in recent months. Republicans have said they are concerned that extending the benefits will increase the deficit, even while they call for an extension of Bush era tax cuts for the richest Americans. Saul Castillo of Madison’s Workers Rights Center says these workers are victims of discrimination. After being fired allegedly for getting “no-match” letters on their social security numbers from the Social Security administration the Workers Rights Center found no record of the letters. Middle-Income U.S. Workers Ill Prepared For Retirement – 401(K)’s Are One Reason- 07/19/10Middle-income workers are ill prepared for retirement according to a new study by the Employee Benefit Research Institute. According to FICO 25.5 percent of consumers now have a credit score below 600. That credit score is a blackmark for individuals hoping to secure a mortgage, new car, or even get a credit card. Low credit could also impact the unemployed who are seeking work, as many employers require credit checks when considering new employees. The first wave of the grassroots campaign involves distribution of over 300,000 flyers at 164 work sites in 23 states. AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka says the campaign will underscore for politicnas that if they fight for working families the AFL-CIO will work hard for them. But Trumka says if the take workers for granted, many politicians will be awfully lonely come November. |
